Bromley Little Theatre opens doors wider with major accessibility upgrade

Bromley Little Theatre, bringing high-quality live theatre to Bromley since 1938, has completed a transformative accessibility project, opening its doors wider to all audiences. This historic 108-seat venue, run entirely by volunteers, has always welcomed everyone, but the new entrance, lift, accessible staircase, and improved toilets will now make live theatre fully accessible to all.

Over the past 3 years, the theatre’s volunteer team has led an ambitious fundraising campaign, raising £91,000 from the community – surpassing its £85,000 target – alongside two key grants: £75,000 from the Veolia Environmental Trust through the Landfill Communities Fund and £20,000 from National Lottery Awards for All (England). The project combined professional design and building works with skilled volunteer effort, including one volunteer who built the theatre’s new bar over the summer.

Bromley Little Theatre is more than a venue, it is a thriving cultural hub that produces up to 18 high-quality shows each year across its main auditorium and studio space. Beyond performances, the theatre works closely with local charities, schools, and community groups to make the arts accessible to all, nurturing creativity and connection throughout Bromley.

The new facilities were shaped by consultation with theatre-goers with physical disabilities, reflecting the theatre’s commitment to inclusion. The improvements were officially unveiled at a ceremony on Saturday 28th March, attended by the Mayor, Councillors, key volunteers, major donors, and some of the theatre’s longest-serving supporters.

The theatre’s accessibility upgrades ensure that thousands of audiences, performers, and volunteers each year can continue to experience outstanding theatre in a welcoming, inclusive environment, cementing its role as a cultural jewel at the heart of Bromley.
