Nalam and Copper Ceylon Launch New Set Menu Making Healthier Tamil Food Choices More Accessible

Created alongside a specialist dietitian, the menu preserves traditional flavours without compromising on flavour.

Nalam, a non-profit Community Interest Company founded by doctors and medical students, has partnered with Bromley-favourite Sri Lankan restaurant Copper Ceylon to launch a new set menu designed to make healthier food choices more accessible within the Tamil community, while preserving the flavours and cultural identity of traditional dishes.

Developed as part of Nalam’s Healthier Communities programme, the menu was created alongside specialist dietitian Fareeha Jay using the new Nalam Better Choice Framework, which assesses dishes against evidence-informed criteria including carbohydrate quantity and quality, fibre, protein, cooking methods, fats, sugar, salt and portion size.

The initiative has a particular focus on type 2 diabetes, which disproportionately affects South Asian communities. Rather than asking people to move away from the foods they know and love, the Nalam Set Menu aims to offer more balanced choices while retaining the flavours and dishes that are central to Tamil food culture.

The collaboration officially launched on Sunday 20 September and the Nalam Set Menu will be a permanent addition to the Copper Ceylon menu, giving diners the opportunity to discover a more balanced take on familiar Tamil dishes while learning more about culturally relevant approaches to nutrition. Starters feature dishes like the Chicken Pepper Fry, Sri Lankan Omelette and a hearty Mutton Bone Soup whilst classic curries (choice of Prawn Red Curry, King Fish Red Curry and Dhal Curry) can be paired with string hoppers or rice. Dessert highlights include the traditional Sweet Pongal and the Chia Seed Payasam.
