Your Bromley to fund installation of poppies

Every year in November poppies are distributed as symbols of Remembrance and events are hosted for us to come together and remember the fallen of the Armed Forces. This year Your Bromley is funding the installation of the poppies of the pedestrianised section of the High Street, including Market Square. The much loved poppies will be put up before the official launch to mark the start of the 2016 Appeal on 29th October.

We have a great day of fun planned for the town centre. Entertainment starts from 1pm on Market Square. There will be a variety of activities such as the traditional Santa Dash, entertainment from a number of acts including the cast of Cirque Beserk, pantomime supporting cast starring Paul Burling and Dawson Chance and many more. Radio 1 DJ, Scott Mills assisted by Alice Perrin, the lovely Tattoo Fixer from Channel 4 will push down the plunger at 5pm.

Spic and Span Bromley – Enhanced Cleansing

As of Monday 31 October, YourBromley is funding a two day per week programme of Enhanced Street Cleansing (ie over and above the street sweeping that the council is responsible for). This will involve a two-person team jet-washing streets in the town centre that will benefit the most from a thorough clean. Starting in the Bromley Village part of the High Street (west side), pavements will be blasted clean and chewing gum stains removed.

If you see a particular street or part of one that really needs a thorough clean please let us know here and we’ll do our best to oblige. Businesses closest to the area being cleaned will be invited to give their specific feedback.

Rateable Values Reassessment – what you need to know

Business Rateable Values are currently being reassessed for implementation on 1 April 2017. This is likely to change your outgoings; currently businesses in and closest to central London seem the most adversely affected, so please read on.

As you may know, every year, non-domestic properties in the UK are obliged to pay a business rate – a charge on a business based on the rateable value of the property or properties that the business occupies. This is calculated by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) and collected by the local authority. The rateable value is then combined with a ‘multiplier’ which is set by central government. Business rates (rateable values and the multiplier) are re-valued every five years. The next revaluation of non-domestic properties in England, Scotland and Wales will take effect on 1 April 2017, having been postponed for two years, from April 2015.

You can check your draft rateable value (RV) online now and let the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) know if any information is incorrect before the council uses it to calculate your business rate bill from 1 April 2017. Click here to check the draft business rates valuation for your premises.

YourBromley anticipates that a transitional relief scheme will almost certainly be introduced, to help businesses adjust to the changes in business rates. We understand that a rise in business rates exemption is under consideration, from £6k to up to £12k. That would mean so long as your property falls below the £12k threshold, you would be eligible for 100% relief, with properties up to £18k having some reduction.

YourBromley has already teamed up with 37 business groups, including 31 BIDs, representing 16,000 businesses across London, and with the GLA, and written collectively to the Government about the impact the rates will have across London. Our aims are:

  • to improve the transitional relief scheme
  • to get mitigating measures
  • to lobby for a long term review of the business rates tax system.

If you have a question about the 2017 revaluation, then the YourBromley team will do our best to assist. Pease contact us on here and we’ll get right back to you.
